Instagram post preview

An Instagram feed post shows at 1080 by 1350 for portrait, a 4:5 ratio, or 1080 by 1080 for square, and since May 2025 the app also shows 3:4 photos, 1080 by 1440, uncropped. The caption is cut off after about 125 characters behind a more link. Frequently asked questions

What size is an Instagram post?
Portrait posts are 1080 by 1350 pixels, a 4:5 ratio, and square posts are 1080 by 1080. Landscape crops to roughly 1.91 to 1. Since May 2025 the Instagram app also shows 3:4 photos, 1080 by 1440, uncropped, which is the shape most phone cameras shoot. Meta's publishing API still lists 4:5 as the tallest, so if you post through a scheduler, check that it takes 3:4. PostDecks lets you switch between them to see how each crop looks.
Where does the caption get cut off?
Instagram truncates feed captions after roughly 125 characters and hides the rest behind a more link. PostDecks shows that exact cut-off point as you type.
Is it free?
